The American Tunnel was originally driven in order to provide a lower, safer access to the Gold King Mine. Miners drove straight into the mountain at an upward angle, beginning at Gladstone. They would then go straight up to join the Gold King workings. The connection was never made, and the American Tunnel was later driven far deeper to access the Sunnyside Mine workings.
